The first sessions of the Sustainable Land Management Training Programme in Tea Cultivation, developed under the DOKSAY Project to promote the adoption of sustainable land management practices in tea cultivation in the Eastern Black Sea Region, were successfully conducted from 7–11 July.
A total of 125 tea producers participated in the trainings, which were organized in cooperation with local neighbourhood headmen in the Elmalı, Tekke, Yeşilılıca, Kömürcüler and Kasarcılar neighbourhoods, as well as in Salarha town centre. The training programme aims to support the reduction of land degradation in tea gardens and the protection of soil health. Within this framework, participants gained knowledge on soil health and the impacts of land degradation on tea yields, methods for observing soil and plants, informed fertilization and liming practices, and the role of biodiversity in maintaining soil health.
Designed using participatory methods and experiential learning tools, the programme also included practical exercises and observation methods enabling tea producers to assess soil health on their own land. In this way, the programme aimed to strengthen producers’ knowledge and skills to implement sustainable land management practices in their own tea gardens.
The trainings also included information on the importance of using personal protective equipment in tea cultivation, and participants were provided with protective equipment.
The trainings conducted under the DOKSAY Project are expected to contribute to the wider adoption of sustainable land management practices in the Eastern Black Sea Region, the protection of soil health, and the strengthening of the long-term sustainability of tea cultivation.
